Pitching Or Batting?

When should Pitching be drafted over Batting? In my league I chose Johan Santana with the seventh overall pick and then I Proceeded to draft Jake Peavy with my second round draft pick. Should I have waited to draft pitching or is that an okay strategy? Some feedback i received said I drafted pitching way to early and that i passed up on premier batters that can not be replaced. Let me know what you think and you strategies for drafting a fantsy baseball team.
